Serena Inspired By Sister’s Memory
One word motivated Serena Williams to win her third Australian Open title on Saturday – “Yetunde”.
The memory of her elder sister Yetunde Price, who was shot dead in Los Angeles in September 2003, drove Williams to blow away top seed Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-2 in the women’s final.
The American is often seen consulting notes during the changeovers in matches, but on Saturday she needed no further tactical reminders. “Every match I write notes. Today my note was just Yetunde,” said the 25-year-old, who will rocket to 14th from 81st in the rankings.
“Usually I write, ‘look at the ball, move forward, do this, do that.’ Today I just had one word.
“Every changeover I looked at it and I just thought of how happy she would have been, how much she always supported me

Third-time Lucky Miss Japan Tops Entertainment Access
Rikkyo University postgraduate student Mika Hagi’s victory in the third time she competed in the Miss Japan contest topped access on the MSN-Mainichi Japanese Interactive’s language entertainment coverage in the week from Jan. 19 to 25.
Coverage of 21-year-old Mami Yamasaki’s steamy new photo collection came in second, while other top-hitting stories included the 18th Japan Best Jewelry Wearer Prizes and rumors about Yakult Swallows player-manager Atsuya Furuta getting a divorce.
In winning this year’s Miss Japan on Jan. 22 in Tokyo, Hagi beat out more than 2,400 contestants, including nine other finalists. It was the third time Hagi had taken part, having competed as an undergraduate and while still in high school.
“I still can’t believe it. It’s like I’m in a dream,” she said after winning. “And it’s a really great dream, too.”
