8 in 10 Korean students tend not to want milk, some students even express their dislike of the milk by tossing it onto the roof of the school, according to Koreabeat!
It seems that a growing number of Korean kids are growing less and less fond of milk, and their parents and schools are all upset about. All I know is, trying to make kids eat what they don’t want to is not my favorite way to spend time.
Lee, a 10-year old boy who attends elementary school K, is small for his age. So every day his mother tells him to drink milk. It is the same at school. Today he threw another milk carton into the trash.
Lee says, “I always have to drink milk with my teacher and my mom and I really don’t like it. It tastes bad but they tell me to drink it, so I throw it away or give it to a friend.”
Many students dislike the milk served in their schools.
Milk doesn’t taste good, but is it is insisted that it be included in school lunches because it is good for the students’ health.
A representative from Seoul Milk said, “it used to be that milk was only consumed in school, but people are looking it at in a different way now. An increasing number of people are now asking if it is still necessary for students to drink milk in school because they can get adequate nutrition at home.”
Who is saying that they don’t want to drink milk because of its poor taste? Because milk tastes bad and they are the ones who must request it, there is no way to make them drink it.
But parents don’t agree. They worry if that if other kids order milk and their child does not, he or she will be too short and not receive enough nutrition.
It is therefore becoming an issue in society that students are throwing away their milk, which they are supposed to choose but which they usually do owing to their parents.
In the classroom there are typically four to seven or so students who either bring their milk home without having drunk it or simply throw it away. Some students express their dislike of the milk by tossing it onto the roof of the school.
But is there no way to make milk delicious, no way to get students to drink it?
One alternative is to include chocolate milk and strawberry milk in school lunches. Most students like those kinds of processed milk so some schools have had contracts to offer them once or twice a week for quite a while.
The problem is that people are unsure how those processed milks are for the health of the students who like them so much. A number of parents do request those milks because they want their children to drink more milk, but they feel uneasy about it.
Lee Bin-pa, representative of a health organization, said, “our plan is that starting in kindergarten the packaging changes, so childrens’ interest in drinking milk grows and they can choose different sizes according to their age group. But to know what kind of milk a child likes it is necessary to talk to them about it.” – Korea Beat
