HONG KONG – Edison Chen is at the center of a media storm after nude and sexually explicit images allegedly of him, Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung emerged on the web, sparking Hong Kong showbiz’s biggest scandal for years.

A series of obscene photographs that appeared online seemingly featuring various local celebrities has sent shock waves through the Hong Kong entertainment industry.

On Sunday, pictures of a young man and woman seemingly taken during sexual intercourse, appeared on a popular news discussion forum. Images bear close resemblance to Edison Chen, a Canadian-born Hong Kong singer and actor who has minor roles in Hollywood flicks such as “The Grudge 2″ and the upcoming “The Dark Knight,” and Gillian Chung, one half of Hong Kong pop duo Twins.

The images were quickly removed from the site, but copies quickly circulated through email and were reposted to some 400 other Websites.

A day later more appeared. These seem to show Chen receiving oral sex from television actress Bobo Chan and others with Chen and Chung in different positions. Still others apparently showing award-winning movie actress Cecilia Cheung at Chen’s apartment have slowly been released on various Internet forums in the following days.

Representatives of the stars in question insist the photos are doctored and are seeking legal advice. The Hong Kong Police say they are investigating two reported cases of publishing indecent materials on the Internet. Local papers reported that the Police are working with Interpol as well as Internet forums and Internet service providers to provide information on users who have posted the photos.

Many in the Hong Kong biz have publicly denounced the pictures and their publication. The Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild calls the incident not only “tragic for the entertainment industry, but for all Hong Kong people. Such immoral behavior is poison to the minds of youth today.”

The Guild is also calling for the government to take more action in curbing indecent and obscene behavior in the media. In 2006 naked photos of Chung taken in the changing room of a Kuala Lumpur concert venue appeared in a Hong Kong tabloid paper caused an uproar in the industry.

The photos of Chen and his ‘conquests’ have captured the attention of Hong Kong, with many people apparently trying to prove the authenticity of the photos. Although the more responsible newspapers are still describing the photos as ‘doctored,’ many experts and industry insiders believe the photos are unlikely to be fake.

The incident has political ramifications too. As Police have issued warnings that distribution of such photographs is likely to be in breach of the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance, which could carry a jail sentence and heavy fines, operators of websites and forums have moved quickly to delete pictures. But many sites have engaged in blatant self censorship and removed any discussion of the incident. That of course has got the free-speech brigade riled. “Nothing is allowed to be discussed, whatever happened to freedom of speech? When did Hong Kong become China?,” one forum user asked.

Over the border in China distribution of the pics is spreading like wildfire, despite a recent SARFT initiative to crack down on Online obscenity. A file purportedly containing all the photos is reported to be being downloaded at the rate of 10,000 times a minute.

Sex Photos Are Likely To Be Real

Hong Kong Police today confirmed that a suspect was arrested Wednesday for distributing indecent images on the internet, after nude and sexually explicit images allegedly of Edison Chen, Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung emerged on the web this week, sparking Hong Kong showbiz’s biggest scandal for years.

Commissioner Tang King Shing said in a press briefing that the police are giving great priority to the case, but gave no further details.

On Sunday, a sexually explicit photo allegedly showing Edison in bed with Gillian surfaced on the internet.

On Monday, more photos, which appear to be screencaps from a video, allegedly of Edison giving Gillian oral sex surfaced. And a separate photo allegedly of Edison receiving oral sex from Bobo also emerged.

Around Tuesday, more photos started appearing online, this time allegedly showing Cecilia posing nude and in provocative poses in Edison’s apartment.

It is rumored that all the photos were taken when the actor-singer dated each woman and were recently hacked from his computer. Other rumors suggest the images were on his mobile phone, which then got lost or stolen.

Gillian’s record company, Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG), issued a press release on Monday saying that the photos were digitally faked and that they had reported the matter to police. Apple Daily, a Hong Kong newspaper, later reported that EEG had filed a police report and that the case is being investigated by the Commercial Crime Bureau’s Technology Crime Division. Local newspapers are reporting that the police are working with Interpol, an organization that facilitates international police cooperation.

Edison’s representatives released a press release on Monday condemning the spread of the photos, although it did not outright say the photos are fakes. A spokeswoman for Edison later denied media reports that Edison had gone to Wanchai police station to file a police report. An executive from Edison’s management company said yesterday that Edison had gone abroad.

Cecilia’s management said yesterday that they had reported the matter to police, and added that they are pleased the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild has taken steps to condemn the photos and to push for the police to locate the source of the photos swiftly. Cecilia’s husband Nicholas Tse said, through his manager, that he believes the pictures were digitally faked.

It is still being debated by Hong Kong media and netizens whether or not the images allegedly of Edison, Gillian, Bobo and Cecilia are real, with some using old photographs of the stars in question to highlight body features and old images of Edison’s home to highlight furniture features, to argue their case in a game of “spot the difference” or, more often, “spot the similarity”.

While most media outlets, including batgwa.com, are cautious and calling the images possible fakes, an industry insider has told batgwa.com that the photos are likely to be real and has pointed to Edison’s management’s reluctance to report the matter to police as “a telling sign”.

The source, who asked not to be named, said that Gillian’s and Cecilia’s respective representatives are getting the police to investigate only as a “knee-jerk attempt at PR spin” and that “it only adds fuel to the fire”. He said they may have been better advised to do as Edison’s representatives seem to want to do and to “let the media fuss die down, before rebuilding reputations”.

There are concerns about privacy and freedom of speech, as the police warn that distributors of the photos may be prosecuted for violating the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance. As the police reportedly work with internet service providers and internet discussion board administrators to track the source of the photos down, many website owners and users have already started self-censorship.

Thousands of Nude Photos of Female Stars Found

After Edison Chen published in his Blog on “counter speech,” the sex scandal that shock the whole city immediately saw new breakthroughs. Police arrested four men and two women, and seized a computer hard drive and found nearly 1,000 nude photos, most in connection with the case, including those rumored in the notice issued, suspected female artiste which had yet to circulate online.

Police said of those arrested, three men are in the computer industry and close to the main source. According to sources, Edison Chen had computer failures and sent to the computer company for repairs and does not rule out the photographs were secretly copied.

 

Police have identified the mastermind of the leaked pictures and have further apprehended four men and two women. After the news got out, one male accomplice have escaped with extra copies of the pictures. Police will not rule out new pictures being circulated. Police have targeted the source and are now in pursuit of the accomplices at large.

On the evening of February 02, Hong Kong Police arrested a man suspected to be involved in the online circulation of nude pictures resembling artistes. Police seized two computers and hundreds of photos relating to the case. However, Mr Wong refused to disclose the number of female actress involved and currently unable to identify whether the photos were tempered with.

Mr Wong stressed that although the these men and women are not the source, but they are very close to the source. Three of the arrested men works in the computer industry, and is familiar with computer technology.

Police are investigating the background and to understand each of the arrested individual’s motives for committing the crime as preliminary investigation suggests that money is not the objective. All of them are unrelated to the man who was arrested the day before. Mr Wong name commented that the police have contacted Interpol and Thailand, Germany, and Canada to seek assistance in thoroughly removing all the nude pictures.

Sources close to the police informed that three of the arrested men operates a computer company in Central. Last year, Edison Chen asked his assistant to bring his computer to the company for repairs. Someone found it contains large number of naked pictures of possible female artistes and took the opportunity to copy the files. The pictures of different naked female stars are close to a thousand.

As someone had hid the nude pictures for such a long time and to suddenly release it recently, the police are studying the offenders motive, but believe it is not simply an act of mischief.

In recent days some members of the public questioned the case involving celebrities, and high-profile investigation of the police. Mr Tang who initially said in a radio programme, possession of nude photos may also be an offense to remind the public not to make senseless speech, the city had attracted condemnation.

Members of the public Chan Sang contact the programme, said: “I estimated that half of the computers in the members of the public contain these photos, whether the police should be doing high-profile house-to-house checks?”

Mr Tang did not respond positively, only saying that the police general involved investigating on crime motivated possession of nude pictures, the time and release of such records and will only make reasonable arrest.

However, the source said, the reason police openly announce the latest developments in the case is to smashed rumors of getting ’scapegoats’.

Edison Chen’s Massive Sex Photo Collection Snares More Starlets

(11th day) Yesterday there were massive numbers of naked photographs circulated online again including those of suspected Gillian and suspected Rachel Ngan.The background of the photographs also indicted the date of the events and that period was when Edison and Vincy were together.

Adding to the rumoured relationship of Gillian and Alex Fong, these imaginary unbelieveable multi relationships is just a mess.

Yesterday morning there were 209 naked photographs circulated online, including those of suspected Gillian and suspected Rachel Ngan. There were three sets on suspected Gillian including one set in red swim suits. As the ealier two sets of photographs shows the female lead had straight shoulder length hair and with the change in hairstyle, it is obvious the male and female leads have associated with one another for at least a year.

Reporter researched on this matter and discovered that the rumours on Gillian and Edison started in early 2003. At that time, coincidentally Gillian had straight shoulder length hair. In September of 2006, Gillian had permed her hair curly which was entirely different from her debut which at that time the image was for a young and clean look.Coincidentally, Edison and Vinchy started out in July, 2006 but before that Edison was aggresively pursuing Vincy.

That same year in October, the two of them were on holiday in America and was photographed hugging and kissing on the streets. It makes one feel that Edison was still secretly involved with Gillian behind Vincy’s back.

Gillian and Alex’s rumours started in October 2003. They were rumoured to have gone on a trip to Japan in 2004 and to Switzerland in 2005. The timing coincide with the period that had rumours linking Edison and Gillian being together.

In addition, one of the female’s photographs that were circulated yesterday resembled Rachel Ngan. It could be clearly seen that the suspect Edison holding a DV filming. The calender in the background of the photograph indicated the date to be February 2006 which suggested the date of filming. Coincidentally this period Edison was pursuing Vincy.

Aside from suspected celebrites naked photographs, former singer Candice Chen was also implicated in this case. Candice and Edison’s elder sister Tricia Chan were in the same batch of newcomers.

As known, Edison and Candice got to know one another at Tricia’s birthday party, became close and secretly dated for a short period of time. It was also claimed that Cathy Leung was also one of the female’s in the photographs but she stepped out to clarify that she is not one of them.

In addition, one of those celebrities implicated; Cecilia Cheung, whose father-in-law Patrick Tse was seen going to Deborah’s house last night. It is unsure if he’s attending the re-union dinner or attending a family meeting. – Oriental Daily

Fake Nude Photos of Super Idol Jolin Tsai

Netizens today reported that images of Jolin Tsai in lingerie had surfaced on the internet. There are four images circulating on the web of a woman, purported to be Jolin, in provocative poses.

It was rumoured that the photos were stolen along with others when Edison Chen computer went in for repair. Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung have not appeared in public since sexually explicit images purportedly of them involved in sex acts with Edison started surfacing on the web Sunday 27 January.

Even before the scandal broke, Edison’s playboy lifestyle had been widely covered by Hong Kong press and each of the female celebrities, purported to be in the leaked images, was once linked with him.

Jolin was widely reported in the press to have dated Edison a few years ago.

Edison became the first celebrity affected by the media storm to comment directly, when he released a video message on Monday.

None of the celebrities purported to appear in the photos have been accused by the police of any wrongdoing.

Instead, the police investigation has focused on tracking down the people who are leaking or spreading the images. Police have so far arrested eight people under suspicion of distributing the images. Two suspects have been charged and have appeared in court. Seven have been bailed.

At the time of writing, many netizens were saying that the woman in the photos purported to be Jolin is not Jolin. Some said Jolin has had tattoos since she was a teenager, while the woman in the photos does not.

More Sex Photos of Gillian and Cecilia Released

Dozens more photos of women, scantily dressed and completely nude in provocative and explicit poses, purported to be Gillian, Cecilia and Vincy surfaced on the internet in the early hours of the morning.

Three photos show a woman, purported to be Vincy, having a shower.

In some photos a woman, purported to be Gillian, poses provocatively in white lingerie. In other images, that appear to be from the same set as an image leaked two days ago, the woman poses in black lingerie.

In around 20 photos, a woman, purported to be Cecilia, poses topless wearing only knickers.

Around a dozen photos depict the woman posing nude on a toilet seat cover.

Several dozen photos show the woman stripping from a police uniform, giving a man, purported to be Edison, a blowjob and masturbating. Clearly, judging by the clothes and backgrounds, some of the photos were taken at the same time as other photos previously leaked.

Oriental Daily News, a Hong Kong newspaper, reported that 300 netizens had signed up to a protest march to demonstrate against the police action. Police have been widely criticized, both in mainstream media and on internet discussion boards, for what people perceive as special treatment for the case, because it involves celebrities, and abuse of the privacy rights of internet users.

Oriental Daily News reported that the protest is due to start on Sunday afternoon and to go from Victoria Park to Wan Chai police headquarters. Hong Kong’s bestselling daily quoted the organizer as saying that the police knew of the march and did not object.

Ming Pao, a Hong Kong newspaper, reported that Gillian is scheduled to start filming a movie late next week. The newspaper speculated whether or not she would meet this commitment, because the singer-actress has not been seen in public since news of the scandal broke.

Hong Kong Disneyland pulled from its website a Chinese New Year advertisement featuring Gillian’s band Twins. However, a spokesperson for Disney denied that the withdrawal had anything to do with the scandal and said that the length of the campaign was decided upon long beforehand.

Reporters for The Sun, a Hong Kong newspaper, tried to track down Vincy at her university campus in Boston. The newspaper had successfully tracked her down a couple of days before, but failed at its latest attempt.

Hong Kong’s third bestselling daily speculated whether their failure was because it was a large campus or whether it was because Vincy is deliberately keeping a low profile.

Even before the scandal broke, Maggie was widely reported in Hong Kong newspapers to have dated Edison a few years ago.

Maggie Q, born Margaret Denise Quigley is an American actress and former fashion model. She initially gained fame in Hong Kong starring in Naked Weapon and Rush Hour 2.

In 2006 she starred alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III.

She played Zhen, the only female member of his IMF team. Maggie played Mai Linh, one of the computer-hacking extortionists in the 2007 Bruce Willis movie Live Free Or Die Hard, the fourth film in the Die Hard franchise.

On August 29, 2007, Balls of Fury opened nationwide in the U.S., where Maggie portrayed the niece of table tennis guru Master Wong (James Hong).

Gillian Chung Sorry for Nude Sex Photos, ‘I Was Very Naive, Very Foolish’

(Day 14) Gillian Chung, one of several prominent Hong Kong stars caught up in a nude photo scandal, said on Monday she was naive and apologized for the incident that has sparked arrests and a media frenzy.

Chung, 27, previously known for her squeaky-clean image, made her eagerly awaited statement before a mass of reporters and video cameras flanked by Charlene Choi, her singing partner in the female pop duo “Twins”.

“The scandal has been a great deal of hurt for me and the people around me. I admit I was naive and foolish in the past but I am already a grown-up now.”

“I would like to thank my manager, company, family and friends for their support. I’m sorry for the trouble that it has caused to the society. I will work even harder and bravely face up to my life in future. I also thank the media for their concern and fans for their unwavering support.”

“As for the influence this incident has had on society, I apologize. In the coming days I will continue to focus on my work and face up to my life,” Chung added, amid cheers from her fans.

The photographs, which appear to show Chung naked in bed with male star Edison Chen, and suggestive images purportedly of around half a dozen other celebrities, including actress Cecilia Cheung, were recently posted online, provoking blanket tabloid coverage in the celebrity-mad former British colony.

Hong Kong police said some 1,300 private shots of celebrities had been stolen from a faulty personal computer, which local media have reported belonged to Chen.

Gillian Gets 200 Protest Calls At Snowstorm Charity Concert

(Day 20) TVB received more than 200 complaints against last night’s appearance of Gillian Chung, her first performance since the scandal erupted. Most complainants said it was inappropriate for Chung to perform at the charity show, which raised money for victims of the mainland’s recent snowstorms.

An online survey also recorded more than 2,400 votes in support of the statement: “We don’t need artists like this (Gillian Chung). Please do not poison our young generations.”

Yesterday at the TVB charity show, Gillian Chung stood in the front row wearing the special event t-shirt and sang with the rest of the entertainers. Then she sang the song In Love For Six Years with her Twins partner Charlene Choi.

During the performance, some people called in to donate “money under the name of “Very silly, very naïve.”

Other names were “Chen XX,” “Black Gil,” etc. All of those kinds of names were filtered off the air by TVB. However, using the name “Twins fans” was acceptable.

Sex Pic Starlets End Edison’s Showbiz Career

(Day 24) The Canadian-born actor at the center of a sex photos scandal Thursday apologized “for all the suffering that has been caused” and announced he was retiring from the Hong Kong entertainment scene.

Explicit photographs of Edison Chen with a string of Hong Kong starlets and pop stars have been plastered across the Internet over the past few weeks, causing a storm in this celebrity-obsessed city.

Chen, 27, said he had come back to Hong Kong to account for himself.

“I would like now to apologize to all the people for all the suffering that has been caused and the problems that have arisen from this,” Chen said, reading out a statement in English to a packed press conference.

“I would like to apologize to all the ladies and to all their families for any harm or hurt that they have been feeling. I am sorry,” he said.

Chen was supposed to return to Hong Kong last weekend to front a press conference about his role in the scandal, but rumors that crime figures have reportedly offered a $100,000 reward to anybody who hacked off his hand reportedly delayed his return.

The 27-year-old singer-actor was instead laying low in the US city of Boston after hearing of the threats, which have reportedly come from a senior figure in the Triad crime organization.

It is believed the gangster has a particular interest in one of the women involved in the scandal, as organized crime is widely believed to play a central role in the local film industry.

The threat was taken so seriously that the landlords of the AIG building in Hong Kong’s Central Business District allegedly withdrew their offer to host Chen’s earlier press conference.

Police are reportedly keeping the gangster in question under surveillance and Chen’s representatives organized 24-hour security for star, who was under suicide watch at one stage.

Media reports say the photos — which allegedly show him in compromising positions with various celebrities, including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung, actress Cecilia Cheung and former actress Bobo Chan — were copied from Chen’s computer when he sent it in for repairs.

Chen admitted taking the photos but said they had been stolen from him.

“I admit that most of the photos being circulated on the Internet were taken by me but these photos were very private and have not been shown to people and were never intended to be shown to anyone,” said the star of “Grudge II.”

Chen said he was assisting the police with their investigation.

“I have been assisting the police since the first day the photos were published and I will continue to assist them,” he said, thanking the police “for their hard work on this case.”

In the wake of the scandal, Vancouver-born Chen said he had decided to retire from the Hong Kong entertainment scene.

“During my time away I have made an important decision. I will wholeheartedly fulfill all commitments I have to date but after that I have decided to step away from the Hong Kong entertainment industry,” he said.

“I have decided to do this to give myself an opportunity to heal myself and to search my soul. I will dedicate my time to charity and community work within the next few months. I will be away from Hong Kong entertainment indefinitely.”

Is Edison Afraid Of Being Whacked Off?

Edison Chen, the marginally talented Grudge 2 star embroiled in a sex scandal dominating the news in the Far East, has bigger problems than his slumping career. According to a report in today’s New York Post, Chen is currently hiding out in the United States because a contract was put on his head in Hong Kong this past weekend.

It seems one of the many girls Chen photographed in compromising positions, a 19-year-old student studying in Boston named Vincy Yeung, happens to have a mob-connected tycoon uncle back home who didn’t much like the fact that pictures of his niece bathing in the shower are currently just a few Internet clicks away.

The uncle in question, 61-year-old Albert Yeung, is the founder of EEG, a hugely influential entertainment consortium involved in everything from DVD wholesaling to the management of Cantonese pop stars. Yeung was perhaps most famously involved in a payola scandal that rocked Hong Kong’s music business in 2003, though his criminal rap sheet is long enough to give the impression that the bounty on Chen’s head isn’t some idle threat.

Ironically, Yeung himself presided over a tabloid that was shuttered in 2002 after publishing a photograph of a semi-naked actress taken during a 1991 kidnapping.

Vincy Yeung and Chen have been dating since 2004; Chen has even told Hong Kong press that he planned on settling down with her after establishing himself as a legitimate movie star. Good luck with that now!

Edison Returns To Hong Kong with 200 Police Escorts

(Day 27) 200 odd policemen and at least 6 different police groups mobilized; round-the-clock police protection; road closures and traffic light hold ups for Edison’s return to Hong Kong draws disbelief and ridicule

The Hong Kong police ensured round-the-clock police protection upon Hong Kong star Edison Chen’s arrival in Hong Kong on Thursday, demonstrating the care taken by the police in ensuring Chen’s safety.

On Thursday morning, Edison Chen boarded the 8a.m flight on Philippine Airlines in Manila in the company of two black bodyguards. At 10:15am, he arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport. He was received by detectives from the Commercial Crime Bureau once clearing immigrations and was escorted out through a discreet side door.

Edison then boarded a silver Mercedes Benz in the company of two Commercial Crime Bureau vehicles. The press caught wind of Edison’s arrival in Hong Kong and attempted to follow them but was stopped by police officers on motorcycles who were part of the motorcade involved in bringing Edison to and fro from his Press Conference.

At 11am, Edison Chen arrived at the International Trade and Exhibition Center in Kowloon Bay where the Hong Kong police had mobilised the Kowloon district shock troops, the Mobile unit, the witness protection group, the commercial criminal case, the traffic police, the criminal investigation team detectives and so on which saw a total of more than 200 policemen providing assistance for Edison’s press con.

Once Edison’s speech was made, more than 80 Mobile-Unit police officers formed a human-chain and encircled Edison’s vehicle.

Coupled with the big weaponry of the Police officers, questions as to whether the mobilization of such extreme police resources was really necessary were raised.

Upon leaving the center, the police held up all other vehicular traffic in order to make sure that Edison Chen’s entourage can travel unimpeded.

The Benz arrived at the apartment on Magazine Gap Road at 520pm. The police then set up a road block and stopped all cars except those belonging to residents from entering. Further ahead by about 100 meters was another police road block where police officers proclaimed that it was to be a private road inaccessible to the public.

At around 10pm, a police car fleet escorted Edison Chen’s vehicle to Four Seasons Hotel. The car fleet went through red lights twice.

Legislators such as Mr Lee Cheuk Yan said that the massive police mobilization was “problematic” and was quoted as saying in Apple Daily that “They don’t go to such great lengths to protect even the Chief Executive.” – Apple Daily
