Hearing-and speech-impaired stage presenter Jiang Xintian passes the sacred flame of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games to the first torchbearer Jin Jing during the lighting ceremony in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing on August 28, 2008.
Clouds cleared enough Thursday morning to allow the sun to ignite the Beijing Paralympic flame, and the organizers believed it boded well.
Jiang Xintian, the 23-year-old girl who ignited the flame out of a concave, burnished mirror, said she was worried about the weather, too.
“When I watched the sky this morning, I was quite worried. My mother and I had prayed for times, hoping that the lighting ceremony would be successful,” said Jiang, who has hearing impairment.
“During the ceremony, the sun did come out, which made me very excited.”
The lighting ceremony also marked the start of a nine-day torch relay as the sacred flame was then sent to Xi’an in northwest China and Shenzhen in the south, where the relay will be launched on Friday and Saturday respectively.
A total of 850 torchbearers will participate in the torch relay along two routes through 11 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
About 4,000 disabled athletes from around the world will compete in the Beijing Pralympics, with the opening ceremony being held at the National Stadium, better known as the Bird’s Nest.
Jiang Xintian - A Beautiful Girl Speaking With Hands
On March 5, 2004, the art regiment of China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe (CDPPAT) put on their first performance in South Korea .
Immediately a deaf and dumb host, 19-year-old Qingdao miss Jiang Xintian’ first appeared, people were attracted by her beautiful and slender facial appearance, model–like shape, elegant qualities and youth vitality. When she stammered out “I am a Jiang Xintian” with “deaf person”‘ on the screen, the house came alive with enormous applause.
She, the very image of poise and dignified style, delivered to all the speechless world that only feeling knows, and every moment is composed of life and inspiration. It was the first time for CDPPAT to have a deaf person as a host in the evening party.
After president Hu Jintao watched the performance of CDPPAT, he praised “your hand-language is very beautiful, affectional and touching”
Her successful performances adds a totally new art point for “my dream”. CDPPAT’s performance at Seoul not only got flowers and applause, but also harvested a new dream.
Disabled but strong determination, the deaf female walks up the world stage
“The performance on the stage for a minute demands a decade of practice”, every actor must have known it, but in Jiang Xintian, perhaps this saying has its special meaning. When people see Jiang Xintian’s self-confidence, gentle and soft smiling face, few can realize the hardships she experienced.
The girl living in the quiet world once felt inferior and even lost due to others’ discrimination and being laughed at, but she never gave up pursuing the dream. Mother always encourages her “you don’t have any difference as long as you are self reliant.”
She also takes this as motto, keeping excellent in study results from primary school to high school, almost always awarded “three good students” annually.
When Xintian was 14 years old, she joined “body special features class” in school, her modeling career began.
At first, just putting on thin and long high-heeled shoes, she even couldn’t stand steadily, not to mention walking. In the first month, her feet bled, were wrapped in bandages, because almost everyday she had to practice, and usually new wound added to the old wound so that her feet were full of scars but she never regret her choice. . with the concentrated effort by the teacher and mother Jiang Xintian made a very great progress.
Ten long years later, Jiang Xintian was confident and self reliant, studying hard, keeping on improving her comprehensive qualities.

“In my growth, the mother gave me a lot which I couldn’t express by words”; Jiang Xintian spoke to the national and international reporters after winning with the competition. Indeed, the maternal love gives her endless strength in her personal growth.
That year, in order to inject the medicine of surfeit after the high fever, she took leave to the voice world forever, while knowing this fact from the doctor, her mother was heart-broken, weeping endlessly day and night.
She then consulted all the big hospitals in Qingdao with her daughter later on, but all doctors had one answer: It’s impossible to cure the little girl. To make Xintian speak who was deaf, though, she in person helped Xintian who was almost 2-years-old with oral practice.
It’s quite easy for the normal kid speak out the sound of “mother”, “father”, but, as far as little Xintian was concerned, she could only see her mother’s mouth shape without the demonstrative sound.
The mother couldn’t remember how many times they had practiced for the only one word “A” The mother even thought of death in the despair.
She carried her daughter to the seaside, watching the endless ocean, listening to the tremendous noises when waves bumped the reef, the sad tears rolled down her cheeks again.
The daughter is innocent, the little Xintian stretched out her small hands to wipe tears for mother, but she didn’t understand why the mother cried. But mother suddenly understood that maternal love exceedded everything.
The kid had already been disabled but shouldn’t been discarded. She determined to give the love and confidence to the child and made her live as normal children, full of love confidence, and living happily.
From then on, the mother never said die again, and she encouraged her daughter as well as herself. She sent Xintian to the recovering class to study and moved to work nearby the school.
As the kid was growing up little by little she began to train her basic living ability. Afterwards she sent Xintian to the deaf school in the center of Qingdao for professional studies such as painting, dancing, and costume designing etc.
The strength of the maternal love is huge. In Jiang Xintian vividly growing, you can see the smile full of love and confidence on her face anytime, which her mother taught her and became the wealth of her life.
The deaf language host: The beautiful girl pursues rosy future
When Jiang Xintian just joined the art regiment, she was decided to host the evening party which meant that she, standing on the stage, simultaneously translated in accordance with the dub special for the deaf and numb. She succeeded at last after hard practice and cooperation.
But suddenly they felt something seemed lost.
Until one day, when she was translating she spoke out sound because of nasty, which gave them inspiration. So the regiment made a decision that she could speak the language out when she made the hand language.
She had no concept of voice since the childhood, so the words she spoke of were very special, although some words were not clear, when she stemmed out the words difficultly, the house was full of vigorous applause— the audience was touched.
The success of a time, Jiang Xintian faces the success one after another calmly: “My success is not only due to my own effort, but also the care, love and the help from a lot of benevolence personages. Thank everyone for the love they give me with which I‘ll work hard and do more meaningful things to return to everyone.”
It was the heart of the beautiful girl and her expectation for the future.
