Teenage girls are coming under pressure to imitate pornographic scenes that are in widespread circulation among youngsters, it has been revealed.
A high number of secondary school pupils are accessing explicit material, with nearly 90% of 13 to 17-year-olds telling pollsters they had seen porn. Most watched online or on material sent to mobile phones.
Interviews with teenagers revealed some girls were making recordings to “entertain boys” by copying explicit scenes from films. A 15-year-old girl told programme makers how her peers record themselves imitating pornographic scenes.
Researchers said a growing number of girls felt pressured into stripping on webcams for their boyfriends.
She said: “Girls will do things on webcams to entertain boys.” Another said: “Once they send the picture it gets used against them. The boy will say, ‘Do more or I’ll show everybody the pictures’. Everyone always regrets what they do.”
One 14-year-old boy said children often received pornography on their mobile phones in class. He said: “In class you’ll hear, ‘Oooohhhhhh ahhhhhh’ when some one gets sent porn. It happens all the time.”
One in five of those surveyed said they were sent unsolicited images on their mobile phones.
More than a quarter (28%) of those quizzed said they learned about sex through watching pornography. And one in seven said viewing porn had influenced their decision about whether to have sex.
The youngsters called for more sex education, with two-thirds saying they needed more information about sex, and 63% said they didn’t discuss sex openly at home. Around 80% told pollsters their parents didn’t know they were able to access pornographic material.
The survey was carried out for Channel 4’s The Sex Education Show Vs Pornography which discovered a third of teens thought pornography was “a good thing”. Pollsters interviewed 443 secondary school pupils in Bristol, Norfolk, Bucks and London.
Presenter Anna Richardson said: ‘We are campaigning for kids to be protected from pornography. Previous generations tended to learn about the facts of life from their parents and teachers in a respectful and moral way.’
‘A lot of the material teens are exposed to is deviant, violent and unrepresentative of real sex. Our kids are looking at images in the playground that would shock most adults.’
